Nigeria Has Second Largest HIV Epidemic Worldwide:unaids

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has reported that Nigeria purportedly has the second largest HIV epidemic in the world and has one of the highest new infection rates in sub-Saharan Africa.

This is just as it said 720,000 Nigerians are on United States PEPFAR-supported HIV treatment with approximately four million Nigerians having received HIV counseling and testing services in 2017 alone.
The acting Public Affairs Officer of the United States Consulate, Kevin Krapf, made this disclosure during the commemoration of the 2017 World AIDS day held in Lagos.

The commemoration was organised by the consulate in collaboration with the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) led by the Provost, Professor Babatunde Solagberu.
With the programmed theme: ‘Increasing Impact through Transparency, Accountability and Partnerships’, Krapf said it reflects the US government longstanding leadership in addressing global HIV/AIDS, increasing our impact to move epidemics from crisis toward control.

He said: “It also highlights the historic opportunity to accelerate progress toward controlling, and ultimately ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic as a public health threat in countries around the world.
“Finally, it emphasises the critical role of transparency, accountability, and partnerships in reaching these goals.

“According to the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Nigeria has the second largest HIV epidemic in the world and has one of the highest new infection rates in sub-Saharan Africa.
“Many people living with HIV in Nigeria are unaware of their status due to insufficient recommended number of HIV testing and counselling centres.

“Low access of antiretroviral treatment remains an issue for people living with HIV in Nigeria, and I welcome the new commitment of the Federal Government of Nigeria to use domestic funds to provide antiretroviral drugs to an additional 50,000 people living with HIV each year.
“The US government, through PEPFAR, has helped not only to save and improve millions of lives, but also transformed the global HIV/AIDS response.

“Currently, more than 720,000 Nigerians are on PEPFAR-supported HIV treatment and approximately four million Nigerians have received HIV counselling and testing services in 2017.
“Also, approximately 50,000 pregnant women have received antiretroviral drugs to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV.” Krapf added: “We are at an unprecedented moment in the global HIV/AIDS response. For the first time in modern history, we have the opportunity to change the very course of a pandemic by controlling it without a vaccine or a cure.

“Controlling the pandemic will lay the groundwork for eliminating or eradicating HIV which we hope will be possible through the future scientific breakthroughs which will lead to an effective HIV vaccine and cure.
“The US government continues to lead the way in the global HIV/AIDS response. But no one country or entity alone can end the AIDS pandemic.
“We are proud to partner governments, the private sector, philanthropic organisations, multilateral institutions, academic institutions, civil society and faith-based organisations, people living with HIV and many others in this project.

“Through this collective effort, we also expect to reduce the future costs required to sustain the HIV/AIDS response.”
It further said: “To accelerate progress toward HIV/AIDS epidemic control, PEPFAR continues to leverage the capabilities, assets, and technological know-how of the private sector, creating innovative solutions to complex problems.”

While thanking the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency for conducting a state-wide aggressive campaign, counselling and HIV/AIDS testing through its mobile clinic initiative, Krapf said their determination to ensure a zero prevalence of HIV in the state aligns with the strategic plan of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.
He also commended the Society for Family Health for providing quality health services to Nigerians, particularly the poor and vulnerable.

Non-academic staff strike disrupts admission screening in varsities

Industrial action by the non-academic staff in the Nigerian University System (NUS) on Monday disrupted the on-going screening of candidates offered admission for the 2017/2018 academic session.

Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) in federal and state universities began an indefinite strike to protest the sharing formula of N23billion released by the federal government for earned allowances to all categories of staff in the NUS.

After the suspension of an indefinite strike by the academic and non-academic staff of the universities early this year, the federal government released N23billion to 24 federal universities to pay the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) for 2009/2010.

The non academic unions of NUS last week kicked against the allocation of N18.3billion to academic staff and N4.6billion to SSANU, NAAT and NASU members out of N23billion released by the federal government for payment of EAA.

In a joint letter dated November 27 and signed by President of SSANU, Samson Ugwoke, NAAT, Sani Suleiman and NASU, Chris Ani, urged members to resume the suspended indefinite strike as from midnight, Sunday, December 3.

At the University of Lagos, members of the three unions after a joint congress, staged protest on campus and rejected the allocation of N23, 220,335.15 million of N958, 000,000 million received by the institution.

Immediately after the joint congress, the union leaders and members stormed the library, Senate building, Bursary and service area to chase out members found at work.

Aside locking the main gate, the striking staff unions stormed the Multipurpose Hall and disrupted the on-going screening of candidates admitted for the new academic year.

The leaders of the unions told the candidates and their parents to go home that the screening will not continue because of the strike and chased out its members handling the admission screening.

As soon as the striking members of JAC stormed the hall, candidates and their parents scampered for safety while leaders of the unions forced each faculty admission to pack and leave the hall.

At the service area which supplies water and light, the protesting SSANU, NAAT and NASU members switched off electricity supply and water to the entire campus.

SSANU, NAAT and NASU UNILAG chairmen, Mr. Olugbenga Adenaya, Mr. Kehinde Ajibade and Suleiman Lawal, marched their members to the main gate, staged protest and condemned the sharing formula adopted by the federal government.

Adenaya wondered why the federal government allocated just N22 million of N958 million to the three non-academic unions in UNILAG and vowed that the strike would continue until the government addresses the skewed allocation.

He disclosed that the strike is not against the university management or the academic staff but a fight against injustice and demanded for an explanation from government on how the N23 billion sharing formula was arrived at.

Two national officers of SSANU and NASU told Daily Sun on phone that the cash offices of universities were shut to prevent members from processing and paying EAA to academic staff.

According to them, the cash office will remain locked and that members would not work even if directed by the vice chancellors, registrars or bursar to process the payment for ASUU.

The Public Relations Officer of SSANU, Mr. Abdussobur Salaam, told Daily Sun that reports from the University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, University of Jos, Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi and University of Port Harcourt indicated members complied with Joint Action Committee (JAC) directive.

Salaam debunked insinuations that state universities are not part of the on-going strike and that members at Olabisi Onabanjo University and Lagos State University complied but investigation revealed that LASU SSANU, NAAT and NASU members ignored the strike and members were at work.

The image maker said members handling admission screening should be part of the on-going strike and that leaders of the unions have the powers to stop the process. He confirmed that JAC members switched off electricity and water in the institutions.

On chasing out staff from bursary (cash office), he said it was not part of the plan to stall the payment of EAA to academic staff but in compliance with directive for JAC members to down tool.

UAM RAG DAY 2017 (PICTURES )

Rag day is a day in some tertiary institutions that students dress like mad people and beg[hustle] for money.

The question is how did this start in Nigeria and what are its advantages?

according to George a student of math Stat comp science define rag day

The Oxford English Dictionary states that the origin of the word "Rag" is from "An act of ragging; esp. an extensive display of noisy disorderly conduct, carried on in defiance of authority or discipline", and provides a citation from 1864, noting that the word was known in Oxford before this date.[1] Early Rag collectors may have ragged passers-by until they made a donation.
Alternatively, it is thought to be from the Victorian era when students took time out of their studies to collect rags to clothe the poor.

Rag Day is a day set aside by student-run charitable fundraising for the poor and less privileged in the society. It started in South Africa at the University of Pretoria in 1925 where the students took to the streets carrying cans and seeking donation from the public. However, the initial aim of the campaign has been crippled in the Nigeria’s tertiary institutions as student use the fund for personal gains.
today, the Student Union  of Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi observing  their Rag Day for fundraising as part of the activity set aside to mark the campus’ 2017 student week.
The student  to the streets of makurdi metropolis dressed in rags and their student identity card to raise fund for charity.
Commenting on the activity, a student of management science, Miracle James confirmed that the essence of Rag Day is to raise fund for the poor but said that the day has now been used by students to raise fund for themselves.
She however urged the government to fund student through bursary and scholarship or set-up Student Trust Fund to help encourage student who are poor.
Another student who spoke on the condition of anonymity said she know the reason for the day but subsequently wish to use the opportunity to support herself in school.
”l know why we are on the street but one need money for textbook, photocopy and typing of assignment. So we want to help ourselves through this,” she said.
makavelu-gist correspondent visited the college and below are some of the photos of the students.

13 Attitudes to get rid of for a healthy and happy love relationship

13 Attitudes to get rid of for a healthy and happy love relationship

Is your relationship suffering and lacking peace and love? are you wondering what may be the cause? check to see where you err and follow the helpful instructions to get rid of frustration, suffering, and pain for a happy and successful love relationship.

First things first, you must first be sure if your relationship is worth fighting for. if it is, then following these helpful tips is all you will need.

1. Jealousy

Jealousy is a feeling of envy. You can only be jealous of something you wish to have and that is because you don’t already have it. Everyone has the tendency to be jealous, but how you control jealousy is all that matters because it is capable of building or destroying you. You don’t have to be a green-eyed monster in your relationship, it can only destroy your happiness and that of your relationship. There are many ways of handling such an issue in a relationship and here is one; for the sake of peace which is a major driving force in every successful relationship, do take a deep breath once you that awful feeling comes knocking at the door of your sweet and peaceful heart. Do take a deep breath, ease out the toxic feeling(s), remind yourself of how awesome you are, then communicate peacefully with your spouse, it will really help.

2. Secrets

You should avoid keeping secrets from your spouse, for your spouse is a great part of you. Your spouse should understand you from the words on your lips to the deepest part of your thoughts. If your partner finds it difficult to understand you, make him or her understand you, keep trying no matter how long it will take, for it is possible to accomplish this.

3. Pride

Pride is a feeling of self-respect and personal worth. We personally encourage self-love and respect though, but this should not confuse you right now. In a relationship, there are some of your rules you must bend or eliminate completely. Your relationship with your dear one should not suffer so much for your pride. Pride absolutely comes before a fall. If you truly love your spouse, you should effortlessly see him or her as yourself, as your spouse is a great part of you.

4. Nagging

Don’t nag in your relationship, it will only frustrate you. You don’t have to worry so much about anything, you will only succeed in destroying your peace of mind and happiness and that of your lover. Nagging drives the whole relationship to the mud, it is not necessary. Yes! It happens and most times very difficult to be controlled, this is why you must cultivate the habit of deep-breathing and self-appraisal, where you remind yourself always that you are awesome and beautiful and should not be associated with anger and grief.

5. Laziness

Maintaining a healthy and happy relationship requires consistency in hard work. Don’t say he’s mine or she’s mine already, you have to keep…. keeping up on those things that got him attracted to you in the first place and vice-versa. It is your responsibility to chat him or her up in the morning, at noon, and before bedtime, for he is a part of you, and she is your jewel. A lazy mind creates room for negative thinking.

Don’t be lazy to do those sit-ups and squats every morning to burn your belly fat and firm your butt (for the ladies). The feeling of gorgeousness should be your priority at least for yourself. Don’t be lazy to make the meal he likes; don’t be lazy to get your hair cleaned up at least once a week; don’t ever be lazy to improve yourself in areas you find yourself deficient.

6. Stinginess

Learn the art of giving. Don’t always expect from your lover, always think of what he/she needs, and what he/she will be happy to have. Surprise your partner with a wrapped gift, it brings joy to the heart.

7. Bad influence

Don’t ever mess with the power of “influence” especially “negative influence” everyone above the age of 15, has the ability to differentiate good from bad. You at this point can tell the impact and consequences of some actions. Now, when you see those negative attitude(s) in a person, you can definitely tell. Some people have the ability to filter the good attitudes from a negative and socially unacceptable fellow but if you know you cant, don’t mess with it, let it go because such influence will only destroy you and your relationships. Remember, do not gamble with the power of negative influence.

8. Negativity

Negative thoughts beget negative actions. What you think in your heart is exactly what your world gives back to you and in turn, find yourself into. How about, thinking of yourself as a priceless and flawless princess that no man will ever want to hurt. You might at this point think this is bullshit but I want you to be careful with thinking that your man has so many other girls out there that are apart from you. This feeling will consume your happiness and worth, you somehow begin to see every girl around him as his other lover, this makes you unnecessarily angry, anxious and a nagging woman. When you put up these attitudes as a result of negative thinking, you make your spouse uncomfortable and you put him or her in an urgent quest for peace, love, care, and affection that he/she cant get from you at the moment. Somehow, what you spent so much time building up in your negative imagination, becomes a reality, an awful reality.

9. Self-condemnation

When you condemn yourself, you kill your strength and ability by yourself. You are different from everybody else, there is a reason you are you, and they are they. This ultimately brings us to “focus” focus on yourself, love yourself, be happy with yourself, only then will you be able to build and develop yourself. The secret here is, self-love and respect attract love and respect from everybody in your life and in your world.

10. Greed

It is an insatiable desire for wealth (personified as one of the deadly sins.) greediness is exactly what makes a lover go astray in a love relationship. You have something(s) in your spouse but you are not just satisfied with it, you want more, therefore you seek for more. Maybe a male friend of your lavishes material wealth on his woman and yours don’t, maybe because he cant afford it or probably he is just too stingy to do what your friend is known for. You should define your relationship from the beginning, only then will you be sure of what you want and will get from your relationship.

11. Selfishness

Don’t be selfish with your lover, respect the feelings of your partner. There is a reason he or she nags. Look beyond the angry face and hurtful words, seek only to understand why your lover is unhappy and uncomfortable. He or she might be seeking more attention or reassurance of love and faithfulness but just don’t know how to state it. It is your responsibility to search through those hot displays of unsatisfaction, and carefully pick and pluck out the real fault. Don’t let those moments frustrate you, don’t be lazy to find out what the real problem is and don’t be fed up until the problem is solved.

12. Unforgiveness

Learn to forgive your spouse when he/she offends you. Try as much as possible to forgive and forget. It is never alright to bring up issues of the past to tackle the present problem. Let the past remain in the past. Never let issues remain unresolved for too long, it will only destroy the peace and love in your relationship.

13. Lack of trust

learn to trust your spouse, it boosts confidence and encourages love and faithfulness in a relationship. don’t ever judge and compare your present relationship to that of your past. always keep in mind that you are dealing with a new person, study carefully to understand your lover and don’t frustrate the peace of the relationship by comparing your ex-lover to your new lover.

My Wife Has 8 Lovers, Fights Me With Knife, Broken Bottles – Husband Asks Court To Dissolve Marriage

My Wife Has 8 Lovers, Fights Me With Knife, Broken Bottles – Husband Asks Court To Dissolve Marriage

Married man reveals the pain he is passing through in his home with his wife as he seeks to call a quit to the marriage. Mr. Olamilekan Yusuf has told the Ile Tuntun Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State that he wants his marriage annulled.

In his words;

“My lord, I’m not likely to see the end of the year if I go further in this marriage with my wife. She’s violent and always threatened me with dangerous objects any time we have a misunderstanding. I pray the court to please separate us.”

According to NAN, Olamilekan had dragged his wife, Damilola to court, praying that it dissolves their 10-year-old union on the accounts that she was disobedient, rude and violent. He added that she was adulterous and that he knew quite a number of her lovers. He thus told the court to terminate their relationship and grant him custody of their two children.

“My lord, my 10-year-old marriage to my wife has been void of the intimacy and fulfillment I desire. My experience from the day one of our marriage has been that of frustration all because of my wife’s irresponsible and indecent acts. “She took to leaving home as early as 6:00 a.m. and retuning not earlier than 10:00 p.m. from the outset of our marriage. She, therefore, doesn’t prepare me breakfast and this continued when we started having our children.

“Our children lack proper care while the house is always looking untidy and dirty. “Whenever I complain about her care free attitude towards me and our children, she will flare up and rain abuses on me. On many occasions, this will result into a fight. “Any time we fight, she will turn violent and rush for a knife or a broken bottle and threaten to stab me with either. “Our neighbours do come to my rescue on many occasions, but she will end up fighting them.

“She has no friends among our neighbours because she has fought with all of them. Her relationship with my family members is also poor. She has no respect and regard for my mother and elder sister, they therefore keep her at arm’s length, “the plaintiff stated in court. “My lord, the worst of it all is that she’s promiscuous. She has been unfaithful to me since the past six years. I have the phone numbers of eight of her lovers and know five of them. Two out of her lovers are dead.

“My wife receives calls from her lovers in my presence late in the night. I have come across love text messages sent to her by her lovers which she can’t deny. “My lord, I’m tired of her indecent lifestyle and I don’t want to die as a result of STDs. I, therefore, pray to be separated from her, the defendant stated.

The defendant agreed to divorce, but disagreed that her husband should have custody of their children.

“I’m also fed up with our marriage because my husband can kill, “ Damilola said. “My lord, my husband is having an affair with my best friend and he rented a house for her. My other friends know this and one of them is in court today as a witness. “He lied that I’m promiscuous. I’m a decent and responsible woman. He’s in the habit of going through my call logs and will always accuse me of dating other men. He believes I was with other men any time I returned home late. He would shout and rake and would end up beating me.

“We often quarrel because he doesn’t want me to work which is unacceptable to me. I don’t believe in depending on my husband solely for survival. He said I shouldn’t work, but he has not been taking good care of me and our children. I provide most of the things our children need. “I sell food stuff and I ensure I cook for the family every morning before leaving home.

“I have kept his misconduct away from his family members because I don’t want to create division in his family,“ the defendant stated.

After he had listened to both parties, the court president, Chief Olasunkanmi Agbaje stated that more evidence would be needed. He, therefore, adjourned the case till November 29 and ordered both parties to come to court with their children and parents.
